Some of you may be familiar with the book “Born to Run”. Just this past Memorial Day, Auburn Running Company was privileged to host its author, Christopher McDougall, at our book signing and talk. Now we have the great distinction of hosting the mythic hero, Caballo Blanco, featured in this best-selling book.
Caballo lives among the Tarahumara Indians, who are isolated in Mexico’s deadly Copper Canyons. For centuries they have practiced techniques that allow them to run hundreds of miles without rest. As described by McDougall, “their superhuman talent is matched by uncanny health and serenity…immune to the diseases and strife that plague modern existence.”
Sadly today, there are fewer Tarahumarans that are continuing the running traditions for a variety of reasons --intermittent drought, violence from outside groups, and economic pressures such as the attrition of villagers going to work in factories in places like Chihuahua.
Caballo Blanco wants to help the non-profit foundation “Norawas” to raise funds, which not only ensures the famous 50 mile run in Copper Canyon is held each year, but also helps the Tarahumarans preserve their culture. His goal is to reach as many runners as he can by taking this road trip. Here is an opportunity to meet a legendary man, whose passion for running and enthusiasm for life is contagious.
Auburn Running Company is supporting this effort by hosting an evening to remember on Oct 17, from 6:00-8:00 pm. A light dinner will be provided by Tsuda’s Old Town Eatery, consisting of pastrami sandwiches or veggie wraps, homemade chips and cookies, iced tea with organic honey. We ask that you kindly show your support of this cause by contributing what you can. Your donation can directly help their runners who have travelled a great distance from their home get housed and fed during the next Copper Canyon Ultra Marathon event.
To ensure your spot, please RSVP by emailing info@auburnrunningcompany.com no later than Wednesday Oct 7.
